Internet accessibility means ensuring that people with a wide range of abilities can easily access the information and functions available on the internet.
The AU-EU D4D Hub aims to close the digital divide and to ensure equal access to information for all users, able and disabled, regardless of the device or software they use and the environment in which they work, so that they are able to use the information, services and tools we provide.
We are committed to making D4D Access (d4daccess.eu) accessible and are actively working to improve the experience for all users by enhancing accessibility and user-friendliness. This means ensuring that our products and content meet current standards, including those referred to in the EU's Website Accessibility Directive (Official Journal of the European Union), which came into force in December 2016.
The Directive requires public sector organisations to apply the European standard EN 301 549 to their websites and online tools. This standard is based on the latest version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, which is AA compliant.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines have been developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as part of the Web Accessibility Initiative. They are intended for all providers, editors, creators and designers of web content.
Accessible content should respect the four principles of web accessibility:
- Perceivable: content should be provided in such a way that the user, with at least one of his or her senses, is able to access it. For example, images are described using alternative text for users with visual impairments.
- Operable: content can be controlled by means of various tools. For example, people who are unable to use a mouse can access content using only the keyboard.
- Understandable: clear and simple language and predictable and consistent interfaces should be used. This is useful for people with cognitive or reading disabilities.
- Robust: the website or app should work properly with various browsers, devices and platforms, including assistive technologies.
Compliance status
D4D Access is optimised to apply the European standard EN 301 549 and partially complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA.
You should be able to:
- Enlarge without difficulty up to 300% most of the elements contained on the website
- Consult most of the elements contained on the website only with the keyboard
- Easily navigate the site thanks to a simple interface and clear language
- View most of the material on the website using assistive technologies, such as a screen reader or magnifying glass.
Despite our efforts to achieve accessibility of the website, some content posted on D4D Access is supplied by third parties and the authors are responsible for optimising their content (for instance by providing videos with subtitles or podcasts with transcripts), which unfortunately limits our field of action.
We constantly monitor the accessibility of D4D Access and continue to make improvements to the accessibility features.
