An introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) for policymakers in the Global South.
Artificial Intelligence is a relatively new policy area. This is especially so in Global South contexts, which this course is designed for, and where AI solutions and capabilities are starting to become more commonplace across a broad range of sectors. By introducing AI to policy makers - as key decision makers in advancing the responsible use and development of AI - we hope to support sustainable and locally appropriate policy measures.
Who is this course for? This online course is oriented to those with some experience with technology policy making, whether from an engineering, legal, commercial or human rights background.
What will you learn? The purpose of this course is to enhance the capacity of policy makers from Africa, Asia and other developing regions to respond to the challenges and benefits of AI in strengthening systems of governance and sustainable development, by institutionalising policies that promote use of AI in ways that are inclusive, responsible and sustainable.
Topics overview: Some of the topics covered in this online course include AI in the Global South, AI and technology policies, AI ethics and human rights, social impact assessments and building responsible AI ecosystems and interdisciplinary approaches.
How much time you need to invest: Completing the course should take approximately 13 hours.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites to entry on this course.
Course Certificate: A course certificate will be generated on the successful completion of the final quiz.

Two recommendations to boost Egypt’s green technology sector
On 4-5 October 2022, Egyptian and European digital actors came together with the purpose of boosting Egypt’s green technology (Greentech) sector. A two-day multi-stakeholder dialogue and workshop gathered over 60 representatives of the private sector, civil society, academia, and government in an effort to draw a common roadmap to support innovation and digital entrepreneurship as a driver to meet Egypt’s sustainability and environmental goals. In particular, emphasis was given to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in the field of resilient agriculture and sustainable smart cities.
